Oh, this is special.

The U.S. Davis Cup is dropping as though their next tie was on red clay or something.
Bob Bryan's bad shoulder mean's he'll be tapping out for the match against Spain this weekend. In his stead is Mardy Fish. Now, Fish has got the hops to do the flying chest bump with Mike. But Fish's record on clay this year? He lost to Andy Roddick in Rome. Yeah. So.
What say Cap't Mac? “We are the underdog but we are not here strictly for our health. We are here because we think we can win. No way do we look at this as a setback.”
Heh heh. I sure hope he doesn't OD on that Kool-Aid.

Naf, this is going to be like when the U.S. hockey team beat the Russians in '80. I believe in miracles!

I was going to say this just shows the effect of an Olympic year on Davis Cup, but are other countries having players drop out too? It doesn't seem like it.

I hope, like Van, that they can pull it out. It would be so cool if it came down to Querrey and he was able to win it.

Van, I'm so impressed with your faith in this team that I'm not even going to rub it in when they lose big.
You know, yogahz, I was thinking that Roddick apparently tried to save himself for this event, and his efforts won't matter, because no one else will be around.
I'm not terribly fond of Davis Cup, mostly because of the format, and so I tend not to have rooting interests. However, if the U.S. wins this, they've got a fan over here.

I will say this for Team USA - they have more of a chance than we Australians do of beating Chile...

...though not that much more, unless Rafa Nadal pulls out too.

So, Jodi, I just looked at the Australian line-up. Who on earth is Samuel Groth? Yikes. Now that's miracle territory.

Sam Groth has won exactly one ATP level match, to my knowledge - at Nottingham this year. Oh, but he beat Janko Tipsarevic in the qualifying.

So, yeah, we're screwed.

We took a seven man squad to Chile, so in all likelihood Groth won't be playing... Guccione and Luczak will be for sure, but then you have Groth; Carsten 'who?' Ball; Robert Smeets, who is ranked #146 (still better than Luczak!); Brydan Klein, who is about three years old; and Bernard Tomic, who is also about three years old, though he is going to be wonderful in maybe five years time. The latter two won the junior title at the Australian Open last year and this year respectively, but those are the biggest titles any of the team has under their belts...

...so we're just going to have to hope the entire Chilean team comes down with food poisoning, and also wear blindfolds. Then if we tagteam them, we just might have a chance.

I say the Aussie team must be awesome if half your team is made up of three-year-olds. I've actually heard of Carsten Ball. Seriously, you're a great fan, and for your sake, I hope they do well.

Cheers, Naf!

When the three year olds on the team - into, say, six year olds - then Australia is going to be a Davis Cup force to be reckoned with.

Perhaps not right now, though. Unless Gonzalez breaks his leg. And maybe Massu too, for good measure.
